For homeowners with solar

Adding a battery to the system you already have

A battery does not just plug in. It needs a backup panel, a place to sit, and the utility's approval of the change.

We start with a load check: what your house draws, what your main panel can take, and which circuits matter most when the grid is down.

  • A backup panel carrying the circuits you choose

  • A spot for the battery that suits the equipment

  • A permit for the change from the city

  • The utility's application, filed with your installer or by us

What to expect

What a battery changes at your panel

  • Which circuits it carries

Usually the refrigerator, lights, internet and a few outlets. An air conditioner or an electric range is a bigger question, and we say so.

  • Where it goes

A garage wall or an outdoor spot, away from doors and windows, as the equipment's instructions allow.

  • What happens to the main panel

Many homes take a backup panel as it stands. Some need a larger panel or service, and the load check tells us.

  • What the utility needs to see

A change to your system is an application of its own. The battery stays off until the utility says in writing that the change is approved.

Before we visit

What to have ready

None of this is a test. It saves the first call.

  • 01

A photo of the main panel

With the door open and the breaker labels in view.

  • 02

A photo of the inverter's label

It carries the model, which tells us what the battery has to work with.

  • 03

    Your solar installer's name

We may need to speak to them about the existing application.

  • 04

    Your list of must-keep circuits

A rough one is fine: the refrigerator, the router, the medical device, the well pump.

Questions from homeowners

Will a battery run my whole house?

It depends on the battery and on your biggest loads. Most homes back up a chosen set of circuits. We say which, in writing, after the load check.

I have no solar yet. Can you help?

We wire the electrical side for the installer you choose. We do not sell or design solar systems.

Do I need a new main panel?

Not always. The load check tells us whether the panel you have can take the backup panel and the new breakers.

Who talks to the utility?

We file with you, or with your installer, as you agree. Either way you hear from us when it moves.

Start with a photo of your panel

Text it to us or use the form. We will call in office hours to book the load check.
